Devon Sports Awards - David King 'Young Volunteer of the Year' Finalist

20th April 10

Devon_Sports_Awards2010_ppauk015.jpg

David has been a considerable help to both Lipson Community College and Lipson Lions over the past 5 years as a hockey umpire. He is now working towards his Level 1 qualification and is seen as 'an incredible talent' by his umpiring mentors from England Hockey. In addition to the school and club work that David does, he was also asked to umpire the County Finals this year for Devon U16's. Wendy Woodstock helped me write the application and we also asked Rob Logan, his Umpire Mentor and Chairman of Lipson Lions Hockey Club, to also submit an application.

David was shortlisted from a very large group as a finalist and was invited to the Awards Evening which took place on the evening of Thursday 1st April at Paignton Zoo. Caroline Atkins (England Cricketer) presented the Awards. Unfortunately David did not win but was 'Highly Commended'.

Lipson win Panathlon Plate Challenge!

20th April 10

On Monday 29th March a team from Lipson Community College attended the Panathlon Plate Challenge held at Marjons and the Devonshire Health Club.

Students participated in the following events with each event giving points towards the team total:

  • Netball
  • Table Tennis
  • Cycling
  • Girl's and Boy's Football
  • Badminton
  • Athletics

The final result all came down to the Athletics event which was held in the afternoon.  We went in to this in second place behind Tamarside and ahead of Sir John Hunt and Plymouth High School for Girls.  Due to an excellent display from the whole team we were able to move above Tamarside by winning both the flat and technical events.

Well done to all of the students!

Stop the Clock Days at Hele's School

20th April 10

In March a series of 'Stop the Clock' Days were run at Hele's School.  These were collapsed curriculum days where students had the opportunity to learn new skills in a variety of different activities.

On Tuesday 16th March, as part of the Year 7 day, I organised for groups to take part in Street Surfing and Indoor Rowing.  On Thursday 25th March I organised a First Aid Course for the Sixth Form students, including those who are completing the Community Sports Leaders Award.

On Friday 26th March I organised a day of sports activities for Year 9 students including:

  • Indoor Rowing with Kevin Sellar
  • Trampolining with Kelly Vallis and Anna Clooke
  • Street Surfing with Sarah Honeywill
  • Dance Mats
  • Cycling
  • In addition to this students took part in boxing and yoga

The students thoroughly enjoyed trying a variety of 'different' activities and this will hopefully spark interest in joining these clubs.

If anyone would like help in organising some of these activities at their school, please let me know.
