Junior Football Organisers Course
Devon FA have offered to tutor a GIRLS ONLY JFO course free of charge for young leaders interested in football from years 10 - 12. Those girls that have completed or who are in the process of completing any of the Sports leaders UK courses or that have an interest in Football are welcome. The school has offered to pay the £12 certification cost for all students completing the course on the understanding that those that pass the course run football activities at lunchtime/afterschool for younger students. All that is required by students is to bring PE kit, astro trainers, shin pads, tracksuit bottoms and long sleeve tops and a pen and paper for the theory section of the course.
The course is due to take place @ Devonport High School for Girls and at Goals on 25th January 2010 and will be an all day course.
If you are interested in completing the course please see Mrs Goolden in the PE office.
Inter-tutor Rowing Competition
All girls from Year 7 - 11 had the opportunity to participate in an inter-tutor rowing competition between Jan 4th - 8th (except for the snow day cancelled lessons!). Some fantastic results were seen with many girls achieving over 80% of the target distances set. Results are being worked out this week and will be posted soon. Points will be added to the House Competition so all efforts were worth it.
Many thanks to Kev Sellar who braved snow and ice to get to us for the week - thank you for your efforts, they are much appreciated!
The next opportunity for Indoor Rowing will be at the Plymouth Schools Competition on Weds 3rd Feb at Plymstock School. We currently have 22 girls entered, with more spaces available. See Mrs Goolden in the PE office for details.
Schools Challenge
PHSG has embraced the Schools Challenge event this year and is aiming to enter over 50 girls to complete the half marathon challenge.
Girls can sign up from Jan 11th - Jan 22nd and need to collect a letter from Mrs Goolden in the PE office at PHSG for information.
The challenge is to run 12.1 miles between January and May, in small sections of 1/2 mile to a mile. The final mile of the half marathon will be run in a Plymouth wide event on the Hoe on Saturday 29th May at 3.00pm.
We will be raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association in support of Simon Adams who has recently been diagnosed with MND and has challenged himself to raise £1 million for the MNDA charity.

Fantastic result in the Secondary Cross-Country Championships 2009
PHSG took 4 teams to this years Secondary Cross-Country Championships in Staddiscombe. The girls all put in 100% effort and represented the school well, being polite and courteous at all times.
It was a cold and windy day, the course was very muddy, but the girls ran well and achieved some great results placing 6th overall out of the 17 schools entered. A great achievement girls considering we only enter the girls events!
Orienteering Success!
The first round of the Panathlon Orienteering Competition took place on Thursday 19th Nov at the River Dart Country Park. A (small) team from PHSG competed making up a team with boys from Mount Tamar Special School.
Rhian Roberts, year 11 and Hannah Greep, year 8 from Plymouth High were outstanding in both their enthusiasm and willingness to work with the boys from Mount Tamar. Thank you girls for a fantastic effort. A big thank you also goes to the Mount Tamar boys, who were a credit to their school - we are proud to be working with you!
The course was a challenge to the girls who have not done much orienteering in the past. They definitely benefitted from the training provided by the Marjons students in the morning though, putting in a great effort with the following results:
The year 8 pair came 6th overall out of 10 teams and placed first in our group for year 8's.
The year 11 pair did brilliantly, coming first out of the year 11 team's in our group, 4th placed team out of 10 in the competition.
Overall, the PHSG/Mount Tamar combined team placed 3rd out of the 4 teams in our group and will be participating in the upcoming orienteering league in preparation for the final Panathlon competition in March.
