Schools Challenge Success on the Hoe

On Saturday 29th May, 68 students from Plymouth High joined over 1200 young athletes on Plymouth Hoe to finish their 13.1 mile run with a 1.1 mile loop around the Hoe. With heavy rain in the morning we thought that we had escaped the worst of it but just as the 29 schools and all their runners arrived the heavens opened again.

However no matter how heavily the rain fell, this couldn't dampen the spirits of the runners who had run the previous 12 miles during lunchtimes and after school by running a mile a week.

All the young athletes who were wearing their bright yellow schools challenge t shirts finished in under 15 minutes with some coming in below the 7 minute mark, all of whom received a goody bag and special schools challenge medal on crossing the line. The PHSG team were one of the first to have all competitors finish and the girls headed off into the melee to meet their parents and be congratulated.

Each athlete will now receive a half marathon medal for completing the half marathon distance which will be presented in a school assembly.

PHSG are also raising money for this year's chosen charity the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Any studentsd with monies still outstanding, please ensure you hand it in with sponsorship forms to the PE dept as soon as possible.

A big well done to all of the girls who took part and massive thanks to the staff who turned up to get soaked through and support the girls. We couldn't have done it without you Mrs Sheffield, Mr Graves, Mme Dauteille, Mr Callaghan, Mr Luxton and Mr Osborne!

Climbing at the Barn in Tavistock

The recent Sport Unlimited Climbing course at the Kitto Centre culminated in a visit to the Barn in Tavistock on Saturday 16th Jan. 10 girls from PHSG were joined by 7 students from JKCC for a day of climbing and bouldering at the Barn.

After an epic journey which seemed to take forever, we arrived at the Barn (which is literally a barn!!) and went inside to be amazed by the excellent facilities that surrounded us. Everyone got kitted up with harnesses and climbing shoes and set about the various challenges that James and Brendan set up. The bouldering area provided much entertainment and everyone succeeded in challenging themselves to an appropriate level (half scaring Mrs Goolden to death!). The ropes were a further challenge for the students to test out their belaying skills and everyone had the opportunity to try lots of routes of varying complexity. We all finished the day exhausted but satisfied with a good days climbing had by all.

I am eager to report that we have a few superstar climbers in the making and have photographic evidence to prove it!!

If you are interested in Climbing and would like to climb at the Kitto centre on a Monday from 4 - 5.30 then please see Mrs Goolden for a letter and consent form (cost is £2.00 per session). Many thanks.

The first round of the Panathlon Orienteering Competition took place on Thursday 19th Nov at the River Dart Country Park. A (small) team from PHSG competed making up a team with boys from Mount Tamar Special School.

Rhian Roberts, year 11 and Hannah Greep, year 8 from Plymouth High were outstanding in both their enthusiasm and willingness to work with the boys from Mount Tamar. Thank you girls for a fantastic effort. A big thank you also goes to the Mount Tamar boys, who were a credit to their school - we are proud to be working with you!

The course was a challenge to the girls who have not done much orienteering in the past. They definitely benefitted from the training provided by the Marjons students in the morning though, putting in a great effort with the following results:

The year 8 pair came 6th overall out of 10 teams and placed first in our group for year 8's.

The year 11 pair did brilliantly, coming first out of the year 11 team's in our group, 4th placed team out of 10 in the competition.

Overall, the PHSG/Mount Tamar combined team placed 3rd out of the 4 teams in our group and will be participating in the upcoming orienteering league in preparation for the final Panathlon competition in March.

On Tuesday 30th June over 150 girls from across the partnership attended a fantastic day of fun activities based on and around the water at the Plymouth Amateur Rowing Club.

Joe Glanfield, Olympic Silver medallist in the 470 Sailing class was on hand to inspire and motivate the girls to have a go at sports such as Gig Rowing, Kayaking and Bellboating. The day was a great success with everyone trying something new and challenging themselves in many ways.

We were also lucky to have Robyn Pearcey the current British Female Champion Surf Kayaker with us for the day to demonstrate some kayak moves and run a master class.

The day was supported by Lloyds TSB as part of National School Sports Week - and looks set to become an annual event with Monday 21st June 2010 being the next likely outdoors day.

Bikeability Opportunities for Year 7's at PHSG

Plymstock SSP were lucky enough to secure funding for 862 Year 6 and 7 students to complete their Level 2 Bikeability certificates. Currently approximately half of PHSG's Year 7's have completed the training - which leaves the rest of you to take up this fantastic opportunity.

The Bikeability Level 2 course teaches you how to ride your bike safely on the roads, it will help to build your confidence when travelling on minor roads, crossing roundabouts and negotiating junctions. You will gain a nationally recognised certificate that is valid for as long as you ride your bike, so is well worth doing!

If you are interested in completing your Level 2 Bikeability certificate during the summer term then find Miss Felton or Mrs Goolden to add your name to the list for the next course which will happen before the end of the Summer term. It's free and all equipment is provided, you just need to be able to ride a bike.

This opportunity is for Year 7's only, so be quick, as it'll be too late once you're in Year 8!!
