Swimming Gala 2010

14th July 10

Montpelier, Shakespeare, Pennycross, Mayflower and Hyde Park competed in this years swimming gala.  In very heavy showers the gala went on regardless and the year 5 students took part in 19 different races- including individual races, team races and some novelty races.  The winners were Hyde Park with Montpelier runners-up.

A big thanks must go to Swim Cats for supporting this gala and for sponsoring the medals and trophy.

Mini Olympics 2010

8th July 10

Mini Olympics -July 5th

In the morning we invited 16 of the most able year 2s up to JKCC for a morning of competitive, challenging activities.  The activities were run by JKCC sports leaders and included football skills, skipping, speed bounce, javelin throws and many more.  At the end of the morning when all the points were added up, Shakespeare emerged the winners with Manadon in 2nd place and Knowle 3rd.

In the afternoon, the rest of the year 2 pupils from all 6 schools came for an afternoon of activities. This was based on participating and getting active, rather than competition.

It was an exhausting day for all involved but thoroughly enjoyable.    Thanks to all the schools for supporting this event - it must have broken the school record for the number of 6 year olds in 2 sports halls at any one time!!!

Cricket festival

On what turned out to be a rainy, misty day 10 teams from years 3 and 4 competed in a cricket festival.  This was hosted at Mayflower school this year and we were lucky to be able to have Callum Whittaker (Plymouth CC captain) who is a member of staff at JKCC to support throughout the day.  Sports leaders from DHSG also helped throughout the day in many capacities- umpiring, team managers, score sheets, results and the final presentation.  They did an excellent job!

Hyde Park A took the gold medals with Manadon the silver.  In the B team competition, Shakespeare were the winners.

Congratulations to all who took part and thanks to Mayflower school for hosting the event.

JUNE/JULY EVENTS

Aquasplah festival

This was our first ever Aquasplash festival!  We invited nervous year 5 students up for an afternoon of fun, confidence building swimming activities.

This event was supported by Swim Cats and Devonport Royal swimming clubs, and our JKCC sports leaders were outstanding as usual.

SCHOOLS CHALLENGE

A group of 10 students from year 10 took part in the annual schools challenge at HMS Raleigh on 23rd June.  These were students who are perhaps thinking of a career in the armed forces, or who had been selected because of their leadership qualities.  The day involved competing against many other school teams from across Devon in 8 different challenges.  The challenges included an obstacle course, problem solving activities and  camouflage challenges.

The students were a credit to the college and competed extremely well!

JKCC PARTNER PRIMARIES

BIKEABILITY
This course teaches children how to ride safely on today's roads - it is the new cycling proficiency.

We have been running this course throughout the term for year 6 children from Shakespeare, Hyde Park, Manadon and Pennycross. The children have thoroughly enjoyed themselves and have learnt an awful lot!

MINI GAMES
We have gone into most of our partner primaries this term to run a competitive multi skills event where the year 1 and year 2 children are tested on their throwing, jumping, skipping and agility skills. From this, the teachers will be able to select their team for the Mini Olympics which is being held at JKCC in July. The sports leaders from years 7-9 have run these events and have been fantastic.

YOUNG LEADERS AWARD
This term I have been working with year 5s from Manadon. They had weekly sessions to teach them basic teaching and leadership skills. This was followed by an assessment where they took small groups of KS1 children for an afternoon. The group were enthusiastic, hard working and very good leaders -Manadon should be extremely proud of them!

TOP UP PROGRAMME
This programme gives any Year 6 students who have not reached the end of Key Stage swimming target the opportunity to have intensive swimming lessons every day for 2 weeks. This is mainly held at our JKCC pool but also at Plymouth College. We have started with Shakespeare, Mayflower and Manadon and are currently working with 80 students from these schools. We use the teachers from SwimCats swimming school for this programme, which has run successfully for the last 5 years.

 JKCC

FREE SWIMMING INITIATIVE

This is a government funded initiative for secondary school students and adults -where non swimmers or weak swimmers can have a 6-week course of lessons completely free. One course has already been run at our college pool and we have 3 more running between half term and the end of July. This opportunity has been taken up by adults and students from across the city and has been thoroughly rewarding.

SWEAT IN THE CITY
This is a girls only exercise initiative involving gym work, fitness suite and dance classes. At JKCC I have asked KS4 and KS5 girls and have a group running weekly at the YMCA fitness suite.

SSCO CLUBS
Table tennis, fitness suite sessions and cheerleading have been running successfully with outside coaches running these sessions

SPORTS LEADERS
All leaders from years 7-9 have been out into primaries running mini games. They have gained valuable experience and for some the highlight was visiting their old schools!

LIVING FOR SPORT PROGRAMME
This programme has run successfully throughout the year with Dan Gardiner from Extended Services and Mrs Ingram co-ordinating the activities. The years programme finished with a bell-boating trip which the students - and staff -thoroughly enjoyed!
