Montpelier, Shakespeare, Pennycross, Mayflower and Hyde Park competed in this years swimming gala. In very heavy showers the gala went on regardless and the year 5 students took part in 19 different races- including individual races, team races and some novelty races. The winners were Hyde Park with Montpelier runners-up.

Mini Olympics -July 5th

In the morning we invited 16 of the most able year 2s up to JKCC for a morning of competitive, challenging activities. The activities were run by JKCC sports leaders and included football skills, skipping, speed bounce, javelin throws and many more. At the end of the morning when all the points were added up, Shakespeare emerged the winners with Manadon in 2nd place and Knowle 3rd.

In the afternoon, the rest of the year 2 pupils from all 6 schools came for an afternoon of activities. This was based on participating and getting active, rather than competition.

It was an exhausting day for all involved but thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks to all the schools for supporting this event - it must have broken the school record for the number of 6 year olds in 2 sports halls at any one time!!!

Cricket festival

On what turned out to be a rainy, misty day 10 teams from years 3 and 4 competed in a cricket festival. This was hosted at Mayflower school this year and we were lucky to be able to have Callum Whittaker (Plymouth CC captain) who is a member of staff at JKCC to support throughout the day. Sports leaders from DHSG also helped throughout the day in many capacities- umpiring, team managers, score sheets, results and the final presentation. They did an excellent job!

Hyde Park A took the gold medals with Manadon the silver. In the B team competition, Shakespeare were the winners.

Congratulations to all who took part and thanks to Mayflower school for hosting the event.

Aquasplah festival

This was our first ever Aquasplash festival! We invited nervous year 5 students up for an afternoon of fun, confidence building swimming activities.

This event was supported by Swim Cats and Devonport Royal swimming clubs, and our JKCC sports leaders were outstanding as usual.

SCHOOLS CHALLENGE

A group of 10 students from year 10 took part in the annual schools challenge at HMS Raleigh on 23rd June. These were students who are perhaps thinking of a career in the armed forces, or who had been selected because of their leadership qualities. The day involved competing against many other school teams from across Devon in 8 different challenges. The challenges included an obstacle course, problem solving activities and camouflage challenges.

The students were a credit to the college and competed extremely well!

JKCC PARTNER PRIMARIES

BIKEABILITY
This course teaches children how to ride safely on today's roads - it is the new cycling proficiency.

We have been running this course throughout the term for year 6 children from Shakespeare, Hyde Park, Manadon and Pennycross. The children have thoroughly enjoyed themselves and have learnt an awful lot!

MINI GAMES
We have gone into most of our partner primaries this term to run a competitive multi skills event where the year 1 and year 2 children are tested on their throwing, jumping, skipping and agility skills. From this, the teachers will be able to select their team for the Mini Olympics which is being held at JKCC in July. The sports leaders from years 7-9 have run these events and have been fantastic.

YOUNG LEADERS AWARD
This term I have been working with year 5s from Manadon. They had weekly sessions to teach them basic teaching and leadership skills. This was followed by an assessment where they took small groups of KS1 children for an afternoon. The group were enthusiastic, hard working and very good leaders -Manadon should be extremely proud of them!

TOP UP PROGRAMME
This programme gives any Year 6 students who have not reached the end of Key Stage swimming target the opportunity to have intensive swimming lessons every day for 2 weeks. This is mainly held at our JKCC pool but also at Plymouth College. We have started with Shakespeare, Mayflower and Manadon and are currently working with 80 students from these schools. We use the teachers from SwimCats swimming school for this programme, which has run successfully for the last 5 years.

JKCC

FREE SWIMMING INITIATIVE

This is a government funded initiative for secondary school students and adults -where non swimmers or weak swimmers can have a 6-week course of lessons completely free. One course has already been run at our college pool and we have 3 more running between half term and the end of July. This opportunity has been taken up by adults and students from across the city and has been thoroughly rewarding.

SWEAT IN THE CITY
This is a girls only exercise initiative involving gym work, fitness suite and dance classes. At JKCC I have asked KS4 and KS5 girls and have a group running weekly at the YMCA fitness suite.

SSCO CLUBS
Table tennis, fitness suite sessions and cheerleading have been running successfully with outside coaches running these sessions

SPORTS LEADERS
All leaders from years 7-9 have been out into primaries running mini games. They have gained valuable experience and for some the highlight was visiting their old schools!

LIVING FOR SPORT PROGRAMME
This programme has run successfully throughout the year with Dan Gardiner from Extended Services and Mrs Ingram co-ordinating the activities. The years programme finished with a bell-boating trip which the students - and staff -thoroughly enjoyed!

Partner Primary Football Festivals

On March 17th we held both boys and girls festivals. In the morning, year 3/4 boys teams from all the partner primaries competed in a round robin tournament. After a busy morning of football the results were the closest they had ever been, with only 3 points between the top three teams. Shakespeare won the tournament for the first time, with Hyde Park B and C teams taking silver and bronze medals, and Knowle a close 4th.

In the afternoon, we held two festivals -one for year 3/4 girls and one for year 5/6 girls. This was the culmination of the coaching sessions for girls that has been happening in schools with the work of Mark Young -Girls' Football Development Officer.

This year. just 2 teams participated in the year 3/4 festival, so Mark did a coaching session followed by a game. Hyde Park were the winners of this.

In the year 5/6 festival, there were some extremely good footballers and the matches were played at a really high standard. Hyde Park emerged as winners, Manadon 2nd and Pennycross 3rd. Well done to all teams for taking part!

" I started off playing various players from other schools in the group stages. There were 8 people in my group and I beat all of them. In the quarter final, I played Alex Persad from DHSB who is a good friend of mine. I beat him 3-1 but the sets were very close. In the semi-final, I played Ben Snow from Exeter. Although he is only 13, he is a very good player, but I managed to beat him 3-0. In the final, I played Dominic Sussex from Torrington. He played very well and beat me 3-1. He was number 1 seed, and I was number 2 seed. I enjoyed the tournament and I am now off this weekend to compete in Derby."

In this festival the emphasis is on mixing with other schools, playing for fun and raising money for a local charity. This year we decided to support Simon Adams in his campaign to raise £1 million for Motor Neurone Disease -the disease from which Simon is tragically suffering.

Plymouth City Council's Sports Development Unit has been working with the two School Sport Partnerships to deliver the national Playground 2 Podium talent ID scheme. The scheme aims to support the achievement of a 5 hour offer for young disabled people, and ensure that those with a higher level of ability are identified and are able to access a talent pathway. This talent pathway could lead them all the way to a podium in London 2012 or Rio de Janeiro 2016 Paralympic Games, or a young person's podium finish could be to access a community based sports club.
Students from JKCC and Shakespeare Primary were among the 110 young people taking part in 10 different challenges which tested their agility, balance, co-ordination, speed and power.

There was also a special appearance from ex-Rugby Union professional Scott Quinnell who himself recently had to battle with dyslexia.
At this event there were two new community based multi-sports clubs launched that are inclusive for anybody aged 8 - 16 with a disability where they can bring friends or siblings along with them.
Multi-sports club at Hele's School, Plympton for more details please contact Colin Broughton on:07599232010 or email: cbroughton@longcause.plymouth.sch.uk
Multi-sports club at Woodview Campus, Whitleigh, for more details please contact Katy Wedgwood on: 07875407601 or email kwedge@live.com

JKCC took 7 talented students from Year 7 to the PE workshop. Here they took part in activities that they would not normally do in PE at school - designed to challenge them and to test 4 of the 5 aspects of the Gifted and Talented criteria.

All the participants got the opportunity to go into the sports science lab and test their flexibility, strength/ power and body composition. Other activities included using the speed lasers, speed parachutes, dartfish for analysis, and participating in speed, agility and quickness tests.

From the workshop all students will receive a profile so schools can give support to the areas that require further work and development.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable day that the students gained a great deal from. Well done to them all!

This was aimed at Year 4s children who were not involved in any clubs either in or out of school. The aim was for the children to try out a number of activities and have fun - so much fun that they might think about joining a club!

The activities they tried were judo, street surfing, tennis, football and fitkidz. All these clubs run at the YMCA Kitto centre and are looking for more members. The Sports Leaders from years 8 and 9 helped on the day and did a great job - so a big thank you to them!

This term I have delivered the Young Leaders Award to year 6 children from Penycross and Shakespeare. These students had sessions throughout the term that taught them the basic skills of organising activites and teaching young children. At the end of the term, they had to demonstrate their skills with KS1 children. The young leaders were brilliant - and here they are in action...

These leaders will now be organising lunchtime clubs for KS1, and helping with school events. When they join JKCC, they will become a Sports Leader and will be helping the SSCo to organise and run events for the primary schools.

Well done to those children from Pennycross and Shakespeare who successfully completed the course!
