Chaddlewood Cheerleading.

6th December 10

CIMG5939 [800x600].JPGWell done to Year 4 pupils form Chaddlewood Primary School who have this term been taking part in Cheerleading Classes.

The year 4 Pupils have this term experienced the fun and excitment cheerleading can bring to their P.E lessons whilst taking part in physical activity.

The year fours have been 'Shaking their pom poms' and producing their own chants and cheers during PE lessons for the last 6 weeks. With their confidence and enthusiasm flowing the year 4's put together a routine utilising all the skills they had learnt during their sessions. The two classes involved then showcased all their hard work at the end of the unit. It was fantastic to see you all taking responsibility for your own performances and to see you now working as a team, not a group of individuals. 'Good Job' everybody. Keep it up.

I hope to see as many of you as possible at the Plymstock SSP Cheerleading festival in March 2011.

Keysteps and Cheerleading Workshop

3rd December 10

CIMG5926 [800x600].JPGOn the 26th November 2010 Primary Teaching Staff from accross the city gathered together to take part in a Cheerleading and Keysteps Gymnastics workshop. The morning began with an introduction to a new Keysteps Gymnastics resource that is already being used accross the city. It is an ideal support material to be used either alongside existing curricular work schemes or alternatively as a material to help support the delivery of extracurricular clubs. Key Step Gymnastics has been developed to support the development of core tasks in the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA) thus, enriching curriculum gymnastics.  It aslo provides a framework for 'grassroots' competition in Primary Schools and is specificaly developed for those with little or no experience in gymnastics. This includes both as a deliverer and participant. The morning concluded with a practical workshop on supporting techniques for several of the skills that are used within the Keysteps Programme. For the Past two years Gymnastics has been a discipline in the Devon Youth Games. The Youth Games follows the Keysteps Programme and for the past two years Plymouth Have been able to enter a very successful team for this event. It is hoped that schools will consider this programme and resource, a usefull tool to help support them in their own delivery of gymnastics, thus improving the quality of the gymnastics experiences provided to pupils.

CIMG5914 [800x600].JPGThe afternoon began with an entirley practical induction to cheerleading. As educators we are all aware of the ever changing developments within society and how these can influence the lives of those we teach. The appearence of films such as 'High School Musical, Bring it on, Step up and Make it Happen' and acts that have had success from programmes such as 'Britains got 'Talent' have increased the popularity of activities such as dance and cheerleading greatly. Within the Partnership our annual Cheerleading Festival, that was developed as a response to such growth in these areas, has now developed so that there will be a County Final to be held in Exeter in 2011. The session opened with the principles behind cheerleading such as; fitness, teamwork, Social interaction, Personal Achievement, increased confidence but most importantlly fun! the workshop continued with an introduction to basic shapes and actions involved within cheerleading. It was then over to the group to utilise some of the skills they had learnt to start thinking about and developing their own short sequence. They truely were living proof that cheerleading is an activity that is inclusive and accessible to all no matter how much experience you may (or may not) have!! - Well done everyone involved! CIMG5927 [800x600].JPG

CIMG5924 [800x600].JPGSupport for the above programmes is available to all schools. All schools are able to access a qualified coach to help support the delivery of these activities. There are also resource packs available to assist you and support you in the delivery of these activities within your school.  should you wish to access any of this or require more information, please contact myself, Kelly Vallis on kvallis@plymstockschool.org.uk or 07967398923.

Plymstock School Community Trampoline Competition

22nd April 09

Plymstock Community Trampoline Club has recently hosted its first Trampoline Competition. This competition gave children form KS 1 and KS 2 the opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have developed within the trampoline club. All participants needed to successfully complete a series of two routines based on the British Gymnastics Trampoline Award Schemes. All Performances were judged by Senior Trampoline Judges from the China Fleet Trampoline Club.

The level of skill and quality shown in some of the performances was very impressive, making the judges’ job ever more difficult!  Medals were awarded to the top three competitors from each category and all competitors received certificates for their fantastic efforts throughout the day.

There were many brilliant performances throughout the day alongside some outstanding ones. Particularly impressive was Joseph Hewitt, a year 2 pupil from Elburton Primary School. Not only did Joseph take the Gold Medal for in his category he also achieved the highest score of the morning against other competitors up to four years his senior. Well Done!

During the afternoon it was the turn of the KS 3 and above competitors. Once Again the Standard was very good. Competitors came from a number of Secondary Schools across the partnership including Ridgeway, Coombe Dean and Plymstock School. Once again the event was judged on the execution of two routines based on the Trampoline Proficiency Awards. Feedback from the judges was that they were highly impressed with the overall standard of the competitors and the way in which the competitors conducted themselves throughout the day.

A well done must go to Peter Adler (Ridgeway) and Josh Wood (Plymstock) who were the only two boys in the competition. Josh and Peter were the only two competitors in their category therefore the battle to take away the gold medal was strong! It was a very close result with Peter Adler finally securing first place. They must both be commended on their sporting behaviour, ending the competition with a ‘congratulatory handshake’ to each other. Well done boys!

Thank you and well done to everyone involved in the day. It was a great success. Hopefully there will be more to come in the future.
