Basketball Festival
On Friday 7th January children from our local Primary Schools came to Coombe Dean School for the annual PAAC yr 5/6 Basketball Festival. This event is aimed at giving the children an opportunity to play in a competitive event and as a chance to showcase the coaching provided by Plymouth Raiders Basketball as part of our OSHL provision in Primary Schools.
For a number of years Plymouth Raiders have provided high quality coaching for our local Schools and this year as an added incentive Raiders invited the top two teams from the Festival to play at Plymouth Pavillions during a Raiders match in April. As a result Pomphlett and Oreston Primary Schools will now take part in the Raiders game in April.
The Festival itself was organised by myself (Sarah Green, SSCo, Coombe Dean School) and run by Yr 11 BTEC leaders from Coombe Dean and they did an excellent job officiating and refereeing.
Thanks must also go to Jamie Burchell, Plymouth Raiders Schools and Community Coach for his help organising the clubs, arranging the Pavillions game and visiting the Festival.
This event from the OSHL clubs, the Festival and the Pavillions match is an example of the outstanding opportunities available to students through the School Sports Partnership.
Playleaders - Leading fun, fair and safe play
During the autumn term I have trained over 250 year 5 & 6 pupils as Playleaders. The training is based on the Positive Play scheme which teaches young leaders how to lead lunchtime playtime sessions.
The emphasis on my training is teaching the youngsters a range of simple games which they can take into the playground and play with their peers and younger children. The children are also taught how to be leaders using the Young Leaders Award model. They are taught the importance of being a good role model.
The emphasis throughout the training is on delivering Fun, Fair and Safe play.
These children will now become part of their Schools team of Playleaders and they will ensure playtimes at Dunstone, Elburton, Goosewell, Hooe, Oreston and Wembury Primary Schools are active and fun!
Girls Active
Girls Active - Leading from the front
On Friday 22nd October as part of the Schools Sports Partnership programme Emma, Jemma, Sophie and Abi plus more than 100 other girls from Schools across the City gave up a day of their school holiday to attend a Girl's Active Leadership day which was held at the Devonshire Health and Racquets Club. The aim of the Girl's Active intitiative is to try and encourage more young people, especially girls, to become engaged in sport and physical activity.
Girls were invited to participate in National Governing Body Leadership Awards in Indoor Rowing, Netball, Tennis, Table Tennis and Badminton. Emma spent her day learning how to deliver Badminton sessions and Jemma learnt the same for Table Tennis whilst Sophie and Abi began the Netball 'C' Umpiring Award. All the sessions involved the girls learning how to deliver a practical session as well as helping to improve their knowledge and understanding of the specific sports and the necessary health and safety procedures. They were given an insight into the qualities needed to become an effective coach/umpire.
Emma, Jemma, Sophie and Abi thoroughly enjoyed their day and benefitted from working collaboratively with peers from across the City. They have also gained a nationally recognised award. They will now help run clubs in their chosen sport back at school and will record their voluntary hours on their Step into Sport Passport.
Organiser of the event Howard Turner said "it has been a pleasure to see the girls empowered to take their first steps towards leading from the front in a variety of sports."
These Leadership opportunities are highly valued at Coombe Dean as they help the individual student to become more confident and willing to volunteer. This in turn helps other students as our leaders pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to their peers as well as supporting the PE department with the delivery of extra curricular clubs

PAAC year 3 & 4 Multi Skills Festival
Multi Skills Festival for Year 3 & 4
Coombe Dean School recently held a Year 3 & 4 Multi Skills Festival. Over 60 Children from Elburton, Goosewell, Oreston, Pomphlett and Wembury Primary Schools took part in this exciting event which the Year 11 BTEC Sports Leaders were responsible for running as part of their BTEC course. The Year 3 & 4 pupils took part in a range of activities designed to improve their Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and Speed. All the children taking part were kept busy by our Leaders and they had a really enjoyable time completing the tasks.
Whilst the emphasis was on participation and enjoyment there was a competitive element and the children were awarded points in some of the activities for their performance. The Leaders also had the task of judging good performances, effort and enthusiasm and they rewarded the younger children with PE merit stickers. The children from Pomphlett Primary School were delighted to be announced the winners narrowly beating Elburton Primary by 1 point!
This event was a huge success with the Year 11 BTEC Sports Leaders excelling in their role. They all worked tirelessly to keep the activities fun and enjoyable for the younger pupils. For many of these BTEC students it was the first opportunity they have had to work with younger pupils and they rose to the occasion magnificently.
