Coombe Dean Leadership Academy Bronze Award

Congratulations to Isobel Cole, yr 8 for being the first of our Young Sports Leaders to achieve a Bronze Award for her commitment to leading and volunteering. Isobel was among the first of our students to take part in the Youth Sports Trusts 'Young Leaders Award'. She has now completed 30 hours of volunteering with a local group.

Isobel desribes what she has done to achieve this award....

"Last year I was given the chance to become a Sports Leader with many other students. I thought that this would be a great opportunity to build up on my leadership skills. I have recently achieved the Bronze level of the award and I'm now working towards the Silver. In order to complete the Bronze I regularly helped to organise and run events at a local club which involved helping out with a sports day.
I am now helping to coach my local Primary Schools Netball club and getting involved with the organisation of the Primary Schools Netball league.
I am finding the experience very inspiring and hope that it will help me in the future."

Coombe Dean School, Elburton is proud of the outstanding achievement of year 10 student Chloe Brew. She has just become the National U15 Indoor Rowing Champion. This result is the latest in her quest to be the best in her sport and comes on top of her Gold at the Plymouth Schools Championship and Silver at National Indoor Rowing Championships. At the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships Chloe rowed 1324m in 5 minutes which is 50m beyond the gold medal target distance for a her age group and just 1m off her personal best distance.

Chloe's success at rowing is due to her natural talent and determination to win but it is also an example of the good work of the School Sports Partnership and Schools Sport Co-ordinator scheme. Chloe was introduced to rowing in year 7 when she took took part in a rowing taster session as part of an enrichment day activity organised by the School Sport Co-ordinator, Sarah Green and run by Plymouth Rowing Coach, Kevin Sellar. It was obvious from this first session that Chloe had the potential to do well in rowing. Chloe joined the Coombe Dean School Rowing Club and started to take part in competitions and since that time she has consistently improved her ranking and personal best distances. Chloe is now achieving the recognition her natural talent and competitve drive deserves.

As an extension to their Leadership work a group of Post 16 Students from Coombe Dean's BTEC PE group are working with Wembury and Hooe Primary Schools to deliver TOPActivity clubs. Emma, Jess , Ryan and Nick are working at Wembury Primary with year 4, 5 & 6 pupils whilst Josh , Luke , Jordan , Dan and Jemma are working at Hooe Primary and have the challenge of working with year 1 & 2 pupils. The Leaders are responsible for planning and delivering an hour long after school club at the two schools for the next half term.

The TOPActivity programme aims to encourage children to participate in physical activity through a range of non-traditional activities. This makes it an exciting programme to deliver and allows the Sportsleaders the opportunity to explore a range of activity themes.
The two groups have already delivered their first sessions and a special mention should go to Josh for his outstanding work at Hooe. He kept a group of 5 & 6 years olds fully active and engaged for a full hour. Something a seasoned Primary School Teacher admitted was no easy task!
Later this term we are hoping more local Primary Schools will take up the offer of working with our outstanding leaders to help the schools with their delivery of quality after school clubs. For their part our Sports Leaders are looking forward to continuing their relationships with Primary Schools as part of their Community Sports Leaders Award.

A group of students attended the Playground to Podium Talent ID day at The Devonshire Club. This programme aims to find future Paralympians and offer them a range of after school clubs to attend. The group spent the day completing a number of physical challenges designed to measure and record their athletic ability. The challenges included sprinting, slalom, throwing and jumping and looking at their faces and by their comments at the end of the day it would be fair to say the group found the activities physically draining!
‘It was hard work and it was exhausting' James
‘It was tiring' Bradley
‘It was very good and also the food was good!' Lauren gave an inspirational speech at the start of the day. She outlined how she had achieved her dream of competing at an Olympics through first attending an event such as the Playground 2 Podium. She said it was important all who attended this day gave their best and had fun in the process, a good motto for everyday life.
Jack, TJ, Anastasia, James, Bradley and Matt will now eagerly wait to see if they have been selected for the next stage of the process and maybe we will be seeing one of them at a future Paralympics!

On Friday 7th January children from our local Primary Schools came to Coombe Dean School for the annual PAAC yr 5/6 Basketball Festival. This event is aimed at giving the children an opportunity to play in a competitive event and as a chance to showcase the coaching provided by Plymouth Raiders Basketball as part of our OSHL provision in Primary Schools.

For a number of years Plymouth Raiders have provided high quality coaching for our local Schools and this year as an added incentive Raiders invited the top two teams from the Festival to play at Plymouth Pavillions during a Raiders match in April. As a result Pomphlett and Oreston Primary Schools will now take part in the Raiders game in April.

The Festival itself was organised by myself (Sarah Green, SSCo, Coombe Dean School) and run by Yr 11 BTEC leaders from Coombe Dean and they did an excellent job officiating and refereeing.

Thanks must also go to Jamie Burchell, Plymouth Raiders Schools and Community Coach for his help organising the clubs, arranging the Pavillions game and visiting the Festival.

Girls Active

Girls Active - Leading from the front

On Friday 22nd October as part of the Schools Sports Partnership programme Emma, Jemma, Sophie and Abi plus more than 100 other girls from Schools across the City gave up a day of their school holiday to attend a Girl's Active Leadership day which was held at the Devonshire Health and Racquets Club. The aim of the Girl's Active intitiative is to try and encourage more young people, especially girls, to become engaged in sport and physical activity.

Girls were invited to participate in National Governing Body Leadership Awards in Indoor Rowing, Netball, Tennis, Table Tennis and Badminton. Emma spent her day learning how to deliver Badminton sessions and Jemma learnt the same for Table Tennis whilst Sophie and Abi began the Netball 'C' Umpiring Award. All the sessions involved the girls learning how to deliver a practical session as well as helping to improve their knowledge and understanding of the specific sports and the necessary health and safety procedures. They were given an insight into the qualities needed to become an effective coach/umpire.

Emma, Jemma, Sophie and Abi thoroughly enjoyed their day and benefitted from working collaboratively with peers from across the City. They have also gained a nationally recognised award. They will now help run clubs in their chosen sport back at school and will record their voluntary hours on their Step into Sport Passport.

Organiser of the event Howard Turner said "it has been a pleasure to see the girls empowered to take their first steps towards leading from the front in a variety of sports."

These Leadership opportunities are highly valued at Coombe Dean as they help the individual student to become more confident and willing to volunteer. This in turn helps other students as our leaders pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to their peers as well as supporting the PE department with the delivery of extra curricular clubs

Over 60 Children from Elburton, Goosewell, Oreston, Pomphlett and Wembury Primary Schools took part in this exciting event which the Year 11 BTEC Sports Leaders were responsible for running as part of their BTEC course. The Year 3 & 4 pupils took part in a range of activities designed to improve their Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and Speed. All the children taking part were kept busy by our Leaders and they had a really enjoyable time completing the tasks.

Whilst the emphasis was on participation and enjoyment there was a competitive element and the children were awarded points in some of the activities for their performance. The Leaders also had the task of judging good performances, effort and enthusiasm and they rewarded the younger children with PE merit stickers. The children from Pomphlett Primary School were delighted to be announced the winners narrowly beating Elburton Primary by 1 point!

This event was a huge success with the Year 11 BTEC Sports Leaders excelling in their role. They all worked tirelessly to keep the activities fun and enjoyable for the younger pupils.
Playleaders are responsible for helping to deliver Positive Playtimes within their Schools. The Schools' involved have a range of equipment for use by children at lunchtimes and the Playleaders' help engage the younger children in play. They learn how to play a number of games and how to lead these games with younger children. During the training they also learn the importance of being a positive role model as well as understanding the need to be responsible, organised and reliable.

My motto for the Playleaders is to make playtime " Fun, Fair and Safe".

PAAC Primary Schools have been involved in this initiative for a number of years now and the Schools continue to see the benefit of improved behaviour at lunchtimes as well as giving children the opportunity to be actively involved in leading and volunteering.

This Festival has become a firm favourite with both staff and pupils. The combination of a morning spent working on skills and drills and an afternoon of competition is a very successful one.

This was an inter-family event with girls from the Plymstock and Plympton Family's of Schools working together. The coaching was lead by coaches working for Plymstock Football Development assisted by yr 10 Football Leaders from Plymstock School. Thank you to Chris French for organising this.

One aim of this Festival was to act as transition event, giving the girls the opportunity to meet with girls from other local schools and to help them with the transition from primary to secondary school in September. Whilst initially nervous and shy of each other the teams soon gelled and new friendships were soon made.

By mixing teams the schools which didn't have enough players for a full squad were still able to participate and all involved agreed the format of the event is excellent.

The competition was won by a team calling themselves 'The Champions' - a brilliant bit of positive thinking and show of confidence by the girls (they choose their team name as part of the team building process).

An excellent day helped by the best weather of the year so far!

Bikeability @ Coombe Dean School

Bikeability

For the second year running a group of year 7 students have just successfully completed the Level Two Bikeability Award. This nationally accreditated cycling scheme is a modern version of the Cycle Proficiency Awards. The Bikeability training involves going out on roads and learning the National Standard Skills for Cycling. To achieve the Level 2 Award the students have to demonstrate their ability to start and stop a journey safely, to be able to hold a good road position as well as show they can negotiate left and right turns to and from major roads to minor roads safely.

On the first day the group spent a short time demonstrating their ability to ride competently within the safety of the school basketball court area. The course then moved out to local roads and this group of students soon proved themselves to be capable and confident cyclists and they really enjoyed the two days of cycling. They found learning by being on the roads and using the junctions they would have to use if cycling into school to be of great benefit and by the middle of Day 2 they were tackling the busy turns into and out of Charnhill Way confidently and most importantly safely!

It is this ‘doing it for real' in a controlled yet live situation that makes Bikeability such a beneficial scheme. The students admit they are more likely to remember their skills and drills when they start cycling by themselves because of the way the course is structured.

SGreen
SSCo

Leap Into Life Festival

Leaping Into Life at Coombe Dean

Children as young as Four were delighted to come to Coombe Dean to take part in the first ever Plymstock Area Academic Council (PAAC) Leap Into life Festival. The children in Foundation and Year 1 from our local Primary Schools took part in a morning of fun activities led, very capably, by our year 8 Young Leaders. The activities were based on the Leap Into Life Scheme: This scheme has been developed for Early Years Education and is designed to develop a childs Physical Literacy. It involves having fun whilst developing their running, jumping, twisting, turning, pushing and pulling skills!

Our Year 8 students did a brilliant job of keeping 60 very excited 4, 5 & 6 year olds busy for two hours! They drew on every bit of their Young Leaders training to ensure all the children experienced a fun, fair and safe session. The Primary Schools staff were impressed with the way our students dealt with the younger children who proved to be quite challenging to organise.

The young children all went back to their School's with smiles on their faces and reward stickers on their chests having had an excellent introduction to Coombe Dean School thanks to our Leaders.

Wow! What a busy few weeks for PAAC Schools. There have been numerous events happening within PAAC:

High 5 Netball league
We have just finished this league , which has been held over three weeks at Plymstock School, and the standard of play has been excellent and the results very close.
The first week was postpone d due to poor weather and it was bitterly cold for week two but the sun shone for the final week and allowed for some exciting matches and excellent scoring.
In the ‘ A' League the top two teams could not be split even on points difference so Hooe and Oreston Primary Schools were declared joint winners of the League. Hooe B Team also won the ‘B' League.
Thank you to the students from Coombe Dean School, Devonport High School for Girls and Plymouth University who helped with the umpiring of this event. An excellent example of schools co-operating and working together across the partnership.

Multi Skills Festival for Year 1 & 2
Plymstock School hosted the yr 1/2 Multi Skills with great success. The event was based on activities from the Active Play resource pack. The yr 1 & 2 pupils took part in a range of activities designed to improve their Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and Speed. Click here to see details of stations.
The event was run by Year 8 Leaders from Plymstock School and they did a really good job of motivating and encouraging the younger children.

Multi Skills Festival for Year 3 & 4
Coombe Dean School was the host for the year 3 & 4 Festival and this time the Year 11 Level 1 SportsLeaders were running the event as part of their assessment for the Level 1 Award.
This Festival was the same as the year 1 & 2 event with the addition of a competitive element. For some of the stations the children were awarded points for their performance and the school with the most points were the winners. Click here for schools score sheet
This event was a huge success with the Year 11 Level 1 Sports Leaders excelling in their role. They all worked tirelessly to keep the activities fun and enjoyable for the younger pupils.

Still to come over the next two weeks: PAAC Basketball Festival and PAAC Netball Festival

Young Leaders @ Coombe Dean

A group of year 8 students have just completed the Young Leaders Award. This group of 25 eager leaders stayed behind school on a Friday for 2 hours for three consecutive weeks! During the sessions they learnt the importance of leading a Fun, Fair and Safe activity.

The group explored the use of the STEP principle for running an activity. They looked how important it is to consider Space, Task, Equipment and People when planning and running a session. They discovered how the success of a session can be influenced by altering any one or all of these elements.

They had great fun practising using a loud voice (sorry for the noise if you were one of the people having a workout in the fitness suite!!) and controlling a game through correct use of space and equipment. They particularly enjoyed planning and leading their own session to the rest of the group.

This group have now the opportunity to gain a school based award. By volunteering and helping with school or community based activities they can gain a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. The students can help with extra-curricular activities, inter-tutor/guild competitions and sports festivals. The next Young Leaders course will take place after half term and by the end of the school I hope to have trained all year 8 students as Young Leaders. In KS4 these students will then be encouraged to register as a ‘Step Into Sport' Volunteer. The nationally run leadership and volunteering programme for young people.

The Young Leaders Award is an important aspect of Coombe Deans strong leadership programme. KS 4 & 5 students already have the opportunity to complete the Youth Sports Trusts Level 1 & 2 Sports Leaders Awards and sports governing body ‘Bolt on' awards and the PE department include leadership as part of its' KS 3 & 4 core PE curriculum.

To continue to develop leadership and volunteering I am in the process of setting up a Leadership Academy at Coombe Dean School. This will give those students with an interest in leading and volunteering an opportunity to be part of the Schools already strong student voice.

Sports Leaders @ Coombe Dean School

Leading the way at Coombe Dean
Coombe Dean Sportsleaders have been involved with a number of sports events this term:
Year 11 Level 1 Award Sportsleaders have helped to organise and run the Plymstock Area Academic Council (PAAC) Primary Cross Country Festival, Year 5/6 Boys and Year 5/6 Girls Hockey Festivals here at Coombe Dean. At these events over 90 pupils from our local primary schools enjoyed competing against one another in friendly yet competitive events. Oreston were winners of the Boys and Girls Hockey and Goosewell won the Cross Country event. Our Sportsleaders were superb. At the Cross Country they were involved with marshalling, acting as finish judges and running as hares. Whilst for the Hockey they were simply brilliant as team managers, timekeepers, scorers and match officials. The primary children had a great time and enjoyed meeting our students.
The Year 11 BTECH PE group put their leadership skills to use at the Plymouth City Primary Cross Country event at Staddiscombe. This is a huge event with children from all of Plymouth's Primary Schools taking part and it always attracts a very large crowd of enthusiastic parents. Whilst standing on a very exposed and windy ‘staddy ‘ fields the year 11's were excellent ambassadors with their positive attitude and willingness to support runners by cheering and even running with the tailenders. At the end I had many comments from parents and staff stating how impressed they were with our students.
For the recent PAAC Year 3/4 Indoor Athletics Festival it was decided to give our younger students a chance to demonstrate their leadership potential by using a group of Year 8 Girls to officiate and manage the event. On the day the Girls were very excited and full of enthusiasm which they channeled successfully enabling the young primary children to have a wonderful time. It was fantastic to see a usually rather timid 12 year old girl suddenly holding the hand of a nervous 7 year old and getting them to run! The Coombe Dean Year 8 girls worked non -stop for 3 hours and they still had the energy to cheer loudly at the end for the presentation and photograph.

S Green

Lipson Multi Skills Festivals

Multi Skills Festivals

Lipson has recently hosted two Multi Skills Festivals for our local primary schools. The first festival was for KS 1 children. This festival gave children as young as 5 their first taste of a fun inter school event.

The festival was designed to give all the children the opportunity to try out their skills; the stations tested their balance, speed, agility, power and co-ordination.

The children were given stickers as a reward for a good performance and for trying really hard. Judging by the loud cheering the children had a fantastic time and went away covered in stickers and with huge smiles on their faces!

The second Multi Skills Festival was for chidren in years 3 and 4. It was also more competitive with the children earning points for their school at each station. Some of the performances were brilliant and the level of skill on show was impressive.

One year 4 boy could do a standing long jump of 1.68m ! These older children had a really good time and relished the competition. The overall winning team for the year 3/4 competition was Lipson Vale.

These festivals were supported by the Sportsleaders from Lipson Community College.
The Community Sportsleaders from years 12/13 acted as team managers for both festivals and the year 11 Junior Sportsleaders judged and recorded the scores for the KS 2 event.

They all did really well and proved themselves to be mature and capable leaders.

Well done to everyone involved.

Panathlon – The City Final

Well done to all our outstanding Panathlon competitors for achieving a brilliant 3rd place in the City of Plymouth Final on Thursday 2nd April at Marjons. We qualified for the Final in a ‘best runner up spot ‘, so to finish in the top 3 out of all 14 secondary schools is fantastic. The manner of our success was particularly pleasing. We were competitive yet upheld the spirit of the competition by having fun and competing in a fair way. To put it simply our students were some of the best behaved, most polite and most sporting at the event. All the staff accompanying our team commented on our student’s camaraderie and general good nature. We had a great day at Marjons.

Some particularly good results were the 1st place gained by our Chess team, beating teams from Plymouth High and Plymstock in the process, plus the Fair Play nominations for our Girls’ Football team and the Cyclists.

The Netball and Basketball players acquitted themselves well and displayed some excellent individual skills and positive team work. The Table Tennis players valiantly attempted to win some points against teams consisting of National standard players and they even managed to do so with smiles on their faces! The Badminton players worked together as a team and did really well as did both the Girls’ and Boys’ Football Teams.

It’s hard to pick out individuals in what is after all a team event but some did stand out. Ray Spear, Year 11 and Lydia Gannon, Year 9, did the difficult task of team managing the Football teams in a mature and efficient manner, Sarah Bickell and Harley Thomas, Year 13, acted as team managers for their 4th Panathlon event, Jemma Dudley for her calm and responsible refereeing of the Table Tennis and Charlotte Friend for coaching and assisting younger students in the Table Tennis.

The Panathlon is about taking part and having fun and our competitors certainly achieved this as well as being successful. Well done everyone for being part of the most enjoyable and fun Panathlon event to date. Roll on December 2009!
