Leadership Week at Plymstock School

During the week commencing 13th December approximately 65 students from Plymstock school will be taking part in leadership awards in cricket, rowing, netball, trampolining and football. Leadership is high profile at Plymstock and students will be using their skills to run lunchtime and after school activities for younger students and those in our partner primaries. we hope that this event will grow and become embedded within the curriculum.

Change for Life Table Tennis Club @ Ridgeway

Ridgeway School have started a Change for Life table tennis club which is being run by students for students. KS4 students who are competent table tennis players are giving up their time to help coach younger and less able students.

Ridgewa School complete Bikeability Level 2

Students from Year 7 at Ridgeway have successfully completed their level 2 Bikeability Award. They now feel more confident to ride their bikes to school.

Elburton Primary School use Plymstock Schools excellent sports facilities

240 children from Elburton Primary School will be attending Plymstock School on Friday 22nd October to make use of the excellent sports facilities. A number of Plymstock School leaders will be giving up their time to assist with the smooth running of the events. Activities will include hockey, basketball, netball and football. This is a great opportunity for our young leaders to develop their skills and inspire our younger children.

Girls Active Leadership opportunities

On Friday 22nd October a number of girls from Plymstock and Ridgeway join forces with other students across the city and take part in leadership awards in a number of different sports. The girls will then help to run clubs back at school in the hope of engaging more young people.

Exciting New Project with Attic Dance

We are hoping to work closely with Attic Dance Company to produce a dance piece to share with staff and students throughout the partnership and in the wider community. We hope to use the 2012 Olympic theme as a stimulus for the project. Our young leaders will work with primary colleagues to learn the routine and then share the work. We hope to arrange a common time when every young person, adult and community member performs the dance. We also hope to embed the Olympic and Paralymic values across every area of the curriculum.

Primary Dance Clubs in Plympton

We are running two very successful dance clubs in Plympton. There is a Key Stage 1 club on Tuesdays at 3.30pm held at Yealmpstone Farm and a Key Stage 2 club held at Ridgeway from 4.45-5.45. The clubs are run by Gilly Ellis and involve fun disco dancing.

Bikeability at Chaddlewood

Congratulations to 33 children from year 6 at Chaddlewood Primary School who have successfully completed their level 2 Bikeability. The children now feel more equipped to ride safely on local roads.

Leadership Academy at Plymstock

Following a successful trip to Swindon for the launch of the 2012 Olympics Leadership event, Plymstock School have foermed a Leadership Academy. The group will meet monthly to plan events and activities that impact on the whole school.

Children inspired by storyteller

Children from Pomphlett and Dunstone primary schools were treated to bell boating with a difference! A professional story teller, David Doyle from Stone Soup, started the story of Odysseus in the classroom and then the children launched their boats from Oreston Quay and actively experienced the story on the water. The children were so inspired by this learning experience and produced some excellent follow up work in the classroom. Sarah Skinsley of Pomphlett said that the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and she would recommend the story tellers to anyone! We hope to trial some new storytelling experiences linked to Physical Activity.

Glen Park Health Week

Bikeability at Ridgeway

Ridgeway are running their third Bikeability course on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th June. All year 7 students have now had the opportunity to undertake cycle training either at Ridgeway School or whilst in their Primary School. The scheme has been a great success and students now feel more confident and equipped to ride on the roads.

Guiness World Record Skipping Challenge

Ridgeway Year 7 and 8 students will be taking part in the Guiness World Record Skipping Challenge on Friday 2nd July at 12.20. Teachers and students are keen to support this challenge along with other young people across the South West.

This term we have started a brand new KS1 fun disco dance club for Plympton children The club is run by Gilly Ellis and we have approximately 20 children attending. the new course starts on Tuesday 8th June at 3.25pm at Yealmpstone Farm at a cost of £10 for 5 sessions.

Traversing Wall at Glen Park Primary

The SSP have erected a portable traversing wall at Glen Park Primary School which the children are really enjoying using. As part of their positive playtime activities, the children have access to this before school and at playtimes and lunchtimes.

Raiders Basketball Club

Rideway School have linked with Plymouth Raiders to launch a basketball club on Fridays from 4-5pm at Ridgeway Sports Centre. The club is for year 6 and Year 7 boys and girls and is run by Jay Marriott. Anyone interested in coming along needs to contact the sports centre at Ridgeway School

TOP Activity Clubs

The Duke of Edinburgh students at Ridgeway School have under gone training to equip them to deliver TOP activity clubs within our partner primary schools. TOP Activity clubs are for those children who aren't engaged in the more traditional school sport or who are physically less active. The clubs are great fun and the children enjoy working alongside young role models from Ridgeway School. We hope to make these clubs sustainable and available to all our primary and secondary schools.

At Ridgeway School we are always striving to create new and exciting opportunities for our young people to become inspired and engaged in school sport and physical activity. This year we have some extra non-traditional school sports on offer including trampolining, cheerleading, boxing, street surfing and yoga. We also run a recreational table tennis club and a basketball club linked with Plymouth Raiders.

Plympton Primary Dance Classes for 7-11 year olds

We have established KS2 fun disco dance classes at Ridgeway School on Tuesday evenings from 4.45-5.45 in the main school hall. The classes are run by a qualified dance teacher and cost only £2 per session. Children from all around Plympton enjoy meeting together to learn new routines and they they perform to their friends and families at the end of the half term.

Plympton Primary Dance Classes KS1

The KS1 fun disco Dance class is held at Chaddlewood School on Tuesday at 3.30pm. The class is run by Gilly Ellis, a qualified dance teacher with many years experience. The children from foundation class to year 2 are really enjoying their dancing and making excellent progress. at the end of the half term block they have a little performance and show their friends and family how well they've done.

Street surfing at Ridgeway school

Ridgeway School hosted the first ever Street surfing competition last year. Clubs continue to run in school on Thursdays from 3-4pm for Ridgeway students. The number of young people in Plympton taknig part in Street surfing has risen greatly this year. Clubs are now established in Glen Park Primary school, Woodford Infants and a junior club is now running at Ridgeway school on Thursdays from 4-5pm.

Gifted and Talented workshop

Students from Ridgeway School attended a Gifted and Talented workshop at Plymstock School recently. The course was run by the South West HEI Excellence Hub and focused on two main themes - Sporting Performance and the Mind Factor and Leadership Challenge.

All students found the courses enjoyable and worthwhile. Thank you to Plymstock School for funding this event.

Ridgeway School Year 7 students, Plympton St Maurice Primary School, Yealmpstone Farm Primary, Chaddlewood Primary and Glen Park have all enjoyed some fun team building activities using the bell boats.

Congratulations must go to Ridgeway students and Chaddllewood children who achieved Paddle power Level 1 awards.

The bell boats are now off the water and activities will resume in March 2010
